ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The main aim of the article is to compare the perception of distance forms of teaching by teachers and students of social work at universities in the Czech Republic during the period of emergency measures taken by the Czech Government against the spread of the COVID-19 virus. THEORETICAL BASE: The Coronavirus pandemic period impacted several human occupational activities, and one of them was higher education in social work. Teachers and their students faced new challenges and they had to orientate themselves quickly with and start to use online teaching tools, although social work education is specific in that it is based on personal interaction. The work follows the studies of Reamer (2019), Kurzman (2019) and others. METHODS: A quantitative research strategy was used in the analysis of the questionnaire survey prepared for the project. OUTCOMES: Teachers perceived distance education as more difficult to prepare as did students who perceived the same complexity of preparation for distance education. Students and teachers evaluated distance education as more demanding in comparison with the face-to-face form of teaching. According to teachers and students, the study of social work can be taught partly in the online space. Exclusively online education is considered less suitable for the preparation of social work occupations. SOCIAL WORK IMPLICATIONS: The application goal is to support the public debate on the issue of the suitability of using distance forms of education for the future of social work education. © 2022, Czech Association of Educators in Social Work. ABSTRACT

The article focuses on the education of socially disadvantaged pupils in primary schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. The theoretical basis of the contribution is children's right to education according to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, social disadvantage of students, criticism of neoliberalism. During the state of emergency in the Czech Republic due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the right to education was provided by distance learning. The main goal is to find out how social workers supported pupils from socially disadvantaged families during the COVID-19 pandemic and how inequality in education in primary schools in the Hradec Kralove Region developed according to social workers. A qualitative strategy was chosen to obtain answers to the set goals, specifically semi-structured interviews with experts. The distance form of education during the COVID-19 pandemic in socially disadvantaged families was found to exacerbated social disadvantage in education and the social system of protection of vulnerable children used elements of control rather than assistance. The results of the study reflect the microeconomic and social impacts of the global pandemic.

ABSTRACT

The article focuses on a current topic in connection with the global pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, COVID-19 disease, related emergency measures, in which distance learning at all levels of study was widely used in the Czech Republic. The main topic of the article is the evaluation of economic aspects of distance learning from the perspective of university students of social work and other helping professions at the University of Hradec Kralove in the Czech Republic. A questionnaire survey was used to obtain responses, and the obtained data were evaluated using basic statistical methods. Students were asked to evaluate their savings, costs and their mental health following distance learning, which took place at universities in the Czech Republic from spring 2020 and throughout the school year 2020 - 2021. Students' savings in travelling, accommodation and food were found to be more significant than the cost of distance learning equipment. It was also found that the pandemic had a negative impact on the mental condition, especially of students in full time studies. The results of the study attach a personal and local part to the overall picture of the impacts of the global pandemic.
